Leaving Certificate examination fees
Students who are taking or repeating the Leaving Certificate must pay examination fees to sit the exams. If you or your parent(s) or guardian(s) hold a medical card, you are exempt from fees.
Exam fees and COVID-19
The Leaving Certificate 2020 has been postponed. Students have been given the option of accepting calculated grades or sitting their written exams at a later date. Read more about calculated grades and the leaving certificate.
There will be no exam fee for the Leaving Certificate 2020. If you have already paid your Leaving Certificate exam fee it will refunded.
If you are taking the Leaving Certificate in a school setting, your school will give you a form. You make the payment through a bank and the bank must stamp the form. You then return the form to the school.
If you, your parent(s) or guardian(s) hold a current medical card you do not have to pay the fee. Put the details of the medical card on the fee payment form and return the form to the school.
If you are an external student (that is, you are sitting your examinations outside of a school setting), you can either apply and pay online or get a form from the Entries section of the State Examinations Commission (see 'Where to apply') and pay through a bank.
School-based students sitting the Leaving Certificate examination for the first time in 2020 must pay a fee of €116.
School-based students repeating the Leaving Certificate pay a fee of €301.
External candidates sitting the exam for the first time pay a fee of €71 for one or two subjects and €116 for 3 or more subjects.
If your parents or guardian hold a current medical card, you do not have to pay the examination fee.
External candidates repeating the Leaving Certificate in 2020 pay fees on a sliding scale as follows:
|Number of subjects||Fees per subject|
|3 or more||€326|
External candidates who hold a current medical card do not have to pay the fee but are still liable for late fees if they apply after the deadline.
External candidates who are in 5th year (or year 1 of their Leaving Certificate programme) cannot enter for any Leaving Certificate examinations in 2020. For example, you cannot sit some exams in 2020 and more exams in 2021.
You can find more information about Leaving Certificate fees on the State Examinations Commission website.
