If you have been in prison in Ireland or if you are in a position to use the Department of Justice Workshop programme as an alternative to the prison system, you can train to develop work-related skills. If necessary, you can also improve your literacy and numeracy skills. Illiteracy is a major problem with many prisoners in Ireland and the prison Education Service has targeted this issue this as a priority. Comprehensive adult literacy classes are widely offered through the prison system. Read more about adult literacy in Ireland here.
The courses on offer vary from centre to centre but, in general, you can choose from courses such as metalwork, sewing, computers, woodwork, life and social skills, upholstery, catering and craftshops.
A significant number of the available training opportunities carry accreditation/certification for the person who completes the required course to the approved standard. For example, you can also sit for exams such as the Junior Certificate if you wish.
At the moment, the Department of Justice workshops take place in training centres in Dublin and Galway.
