CervicalCheck: The National Cervical Screening Programme

Information

CervicalCheck is a national screening programme to prevent and control cervical cancer. The programme provides smear tests to women between the ages of 25 and 60.

The programme is voluntary; you are free to choose not to take part.

If you have any concerns regarding cervical cancer, have a family history of cervical cancer or symptoms you are worried about, you should contact your family doctor (GP).

Informed choice and your rights charter of your rights (pdf), which sets out the standards you can expect from the screening programme, your right to accurate information, etc. It is important to remember that your agreement to take part in the programme is on the basis that you are capable of making an informed choice and give informed consent. This means that you understand the purpose of the screening programme and you take part in the screening of your own free will.

Eligibility

CervicalCheck provides free smear tests to women aged 25 to 60. A smear test is a simple procedure that only takes minutes and is the most effective way to detect changes in the cells of the cervix.

Getting an appointment

To arrange a smear test you can contact a registered smeartaker of your choice to make an appointment. Thousands of GPs, practice nurses, women's health, family planning and Well Woman clinics all over Ireland are registered and you can see a full list in the Find a Smeartaker section of CervicalCheck or by calling CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.

CervicalCheck also sends invitation letters to women who are on the CervicalCheck register. You can check that you are on the register in the 'Check Your Registration/Eligibility' section of the CervicalCheck site. If you are not on the register you can add or update your personal details. If you have any questions you can call CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.

Recall

Women who have already had a CervicalCheck smear test since the start of the programme on 1 September 2008 will be automatically re-called by letter when their next smear test is due.

Women outside of the eligibility guidelines

Although CervicalCheck normally provides free smear tests only to women aged 25 to 60, there are a number of exemptions to the screening age including:

  • Women over the age of 60 who have never had a smear test
  • Women under the age of 25 who have attended a colposcopy service and require follow-up
  • Women who are post organ transplant
  • Women who have HIV
  • Women who are on renal dialysis
Women who are outside the eligibility guidelines should discuss their cervical screening needs with a GP, practice nurse or family planning clinic. Women who are outside the eligibility guidelines above, including medical card holders, do not receive a smear test free of charge or through the general scheme for medical card holders. information leaflets which provide simple information on cervical screening and what to expect when you go for your smear test.
