Students who are taking or repeating the Leaving Certificate must pay examination fees in order to sit the exams. If you or your parent(s) or guardian(s) hold a medical card, you are exempt from these fees.
The fee is due to be paid by 31 January 2011. If you have not paid your exam fees on time, you can still pay after 31 January but you will be charged an extra fee per subject (currently €30 per subject for applications received between 1 February and 28 February 2011 inclusive). Applications are not being accepted after 28 February 2011 other than in very exceptional circumstances and on payment of a late fee of €49 per subject. Late entries will not be accepted for subjects with a practical, oral or project component.
If you are taking the Leaving Certificate in a school setting, your school will give you a form. You make the payment through a bank and the bank must stamp the form. You then return the form to the school.
If you are an external student (that is, you are sitting your examinations outside of a school setting), you can either apply and pay online or get a form from the Entries section of the State Examinations Commission (see 'Where to apply') and pay through a bank.
If you, your parent(s) or guardian(s) hold a current medical card you do not have to pay the fee. Put the details of the medical card on the fee payment form and return the form to the school. If you are exempt from fees under the medical card rule you are still liable for late fees if you apply after the deadline.
School-based students sitting the Leaving Certificate examination for the first time in 2011 must pay a fee of €109. External candidates sitting the exam for the first time pay a fee of €67 for one or two subjects and €109 for 3 or more subjects. If your parents or guardian hold a current medical card, you do not have to pay the fee.
School-based students repeating the Leaving Certificate must pay a fee of €284.
External candidates repeating the Leaving Certificate in 2011 pay fees on a sliding scale as follows:
| No. of Subjects | Fees per subject |
| 1 subject | €109 |
| 2 subjects | €199 |
| 3 or more | €308 |
